Blogging is for travel influencers, Pinterest recipes, and yoga moms.
Blogging is so 2012. Viral videos are the way of the future.
Blogging is SO MUCH WORK.
Wrong. Wrong. And Wrong.
The truth is, blogging is alive and kicking, and the perfect, almost free, marketing strategy for small businesses.
If you don’t already know, a blog helps to:
But when learning about how to blog for your small business, it’s hard to decode what’s real (keywords and Google’s guidelines) from what’s not (keyword stuffing and word count minimums).
So today, let’s break down some of the biggest myths in the blogging world so you can launch a blog that actually makes a difference in your business.
There’s no doubt that short videos (hello Tiktok and IG Reels) are the trendiest way to reach new audiences.
But that doesn’t mean blogging is dead. Or stuck in 2012.
In fact, 77% of internet users regularly read blogs.
Think about it.
You turn to blogs when you need:
Your blog is a free educational, inspirational, and entertaining resource for internet searchers.
Curiosity and an eagerness to learn? Those never goes out of style.
I won’t lie, a lot of the blogs I read are titled something like “10 Day Ireland Itinerary” or “Must-Do Experiences In Costa Rica”.
But you know what else I search for?
And so much more.
These blog posts lead me to service providers who freely share their knowledge while also directing me to their own work.
So when I decide to outsource my Dubsado setup, make the switch to Showit, book that brand photoshoot, or hire a bookkeeper…I already know an expert I can trust.
This goes the exact same for your audience.
By strategically blogging about topics that your ideal clients are curious about (not just packing light tips), you’re able to get in front of them and position yourself as the go-to in your industry.
Sure, the chances of someone Googling a question, landing on your blog, and instantly hiring your business for a $$$$ project are low. But so are the chances someone sees your last IG post on the explore page, heads to your profile, and clicks your ‘apply now’ button.
Blogging is a long-term strategy that creates trust and authority but pays off with eager clients and open wallets.
How come?
Because those small businesses are creating quality content that gets their brand in front of new, aligned audiences who need support.
This is one of the most common blogging myths out there.
“Blogs need to be at least 300 words.”
“Blogs shouldn’t be more than 1400 words.”
“Blogs HAVE to be 2000+ words for any impact.”
UGH.
Google itself has stated that word count is not a ranking factor for your blogs.
Let’s say it again for those in the back: WORD COUNT IS NOT A RANKING FACTOR FOR YOUR BLOGS.
What matters is the quality of your content.
If you write a 2,500-word blog post full of rambling tangents and streams of consciousness…then you’re blog probably isn’t going to do so well. But if you write an 800-word blog post packed with real-life knowledge, backed by keyword research, and formatted for easy reading…then expect to see some real engagement and visibility.
Psst. this word count guideline, or lack of guideline, goes for your entire website, not just blogs.
Another super popular myth is that WordPress is the best blogging platform and the best SEO platform.
It’s just not true.
We all know how much of a hot topic SEO is in the online world. It’s on the radar for most businesses with an online presence.
Now, imagine a website platform like Squarespace or Wix saying ‘nah, we aren’t going to worry about SEO. Who cares if our websites don’t rank.” You know that would be a horrible business decision for them that would see them lose clients, revenue, and their reputation.
From a personal experience, I’ve had a blog on both Squarespace and WordPress (via Showit), and both platforms resulted in posts ranking on the first page of Google.
There are a lot of elements that go into creating a ranking blog post – keywords, website speed, website security, quality content, links – but the platform you’re on is not on that list.
Look, the truth is researching and writing content may not come naturally to some people. We all have our different strengths after all (let’s not talk about how many times I have to record an IG story before I’m happy with the outcome).
But there are steps you can take so that blogging doesn’t feel like a complete time and energy drain.
These steps include:
That means in less than 30 minutes, you already have a blog topic your audience is interested in, a list of all the points you need to talk about in your blog, and a complete blog outline.
It’s also important to look at blogging as not just a one-and-done piece of content that disappears after you hit publish.
Your blog post will gain traction and authority over time.
By spending a few hours now to craft a high-quality, well-formatted blog post, you can continue to bring in new eyes and new leads for months and years to come.
Does blogging feel more possible for you now that we’ve busted these myths?
