Hiring a website copywriter might seem straightforward. Do a quick little Google search or ask for referrals on Instagram, right?
All you’re after is website copy that feels good (not sleazy or scripted), shows that you’re a badass, and you know, sells.
But when you get a list of 12 *highly recommended* copywriters and start browsing their websites, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the different packages, processes, and messaging jargon.
Maybe you’re wondering, ‘What website copy style works? Is this process going to be a massive time suck? Will my copy sound like me and reflect my brand?’
Then stick around.
I’m giving you a behind-the-scenes look at my done-for-you website copy process so you know exactly what to expect when we work together.
Feel-good copywriting (aka ethical copywriting) isn’t about slapping some ooey-gooey, comforting words onto your website and calling it a day. It’s about writing copy that shows your genuine personality and values, acknowledges your audience’s struggles without cutting them down, and offers an honest explanation of how you help them.
And we do all that by infusing ethical persuasion techniques (based on the TARES model) and consumer psychology (using what makes your audience tick to motivate them to work with you).
Done-for-you website copy means you don’t have to sit at your laptop, browse competitor’s websites, and stare at a blank Google Doc wondering how you’re supposed to capture your values, impact, and audience in one headline.
Instead, I get to!
You’ll pass all your website copywriting needs to me and focus on other items on your to-do list.
But, collaboration is an important part of my copywriting process. This means you’ll take part in an initial strategy call (which feels like we’re chatting over coffee) and provide guided feedback on your web copy drafts.
Don’t worry, I give you instructions on how to prepare and complete both of these things!
First, you’ll fill out an inquiry form so I can learn about you, your business, and what kind of help you’re looking for. To be honest, I get a little nervous meeting new people! You’ve got my entire website and Instagram to get to know me, this is my chance to know you before we talk.
We’ll then get on a free, 30-minute Discovery Call to chat about your goals. While my copywriting packages and pricing are all online, this call is an opportunity to ask questions, customize projects, talk timelines, and see if we vibe together.
I will never pressure you or ask you to sign a contract on that call. Even if you’re super excited about working together. I want you to have time to reflect on your decision and make one that feels good to you not just in the moment, but in the long run.
After our call, I’ll follow up with a recap so you have all the information you need to feel confident.
Once you’ve given me the thumbs up that you’re ready to move forward with done-for-you website copy, I’ll send you a proposal and contract. The contract terms are straightforward, outlining shared responsibilities and expectations, but it’s important to have for both of us.
From there, you’ll pay the initial deposit, typically 50% of the project fee. However, I can create custom payment plans if needed – this is something we’ll chat about on our Discovery Call.
Next, you’ll complete a short intake questionnaire and upload any brand materials you have. Some clients word-vomit their entire life story in the questionnaire while others struggle with putting the vision into words, so don’t overthink your responses. We’ll have a 60-minute strategy call to review your questionnaire together.
The strategy call is my favourite part of the website copywriting process. We’ll chat about your purpose and goals, who your ideal clients are and how you help them, and how you want to come across online.
Essentially, you get a sounding board to share all your ideas, passions, and hopes for your business and I get to listen to your stories!
At the same time, I’ll be taking notes because trust me, you’ll share some great messaging gems without even knowing it.
Within a few days of our strategy call, I’ll create and deliver your website outline. This document will explain the flow of your website copy, where all the important information fits, and why I’ve made certain copy decisions.
Plus, you’ll get some initial messaging ideas and a taste of your brand voice in action.
If you’ve made any big changes to your business or website, this is where you’ll let me know so I can modify your outline before I start writing.
After you’ve signed off on your website outline, I’ll start crafting your website copy! A 3-page website typically takes a week to complete.
When I send you your first website copy draft, you’ll also receive a feedback guide that gives you instructions on how to review your copy and provide helpful feedback. If you’re struggling to put your feedback into written words, you can book a live editing call where we chat about your web copy together.
After I’ve received your feedback, I’ll get to work revising your web copy before sending you your second draft. You’ll then repeat the feedback process (usually there are minor or no edits at all here), and I’ll finalize your web copy!
If this sounds like a lot of back and forth, I promise that I keep it simple. Celeste, a website designer and previous client, even described it as ‘the most smooth and seamless process I’ve ever experienced! It was so easy to give feedback and Isobel’s communication was incredible.’
I won’t lie, sending off your finalized website copy is my least favourite part of the copywriting process. Not because I’m not excited to see your website launch and your business grow (trust me, I will be your first website visitor and proudest supporter), but because it means our project is over!
Okay, okay, I actually have a hard time with goodbyes. So I’ll continue popping back in to see how your website launch is doing and hear about all the new confidence you have with your messaging.
And of course, if you ever have future copywriting projects then I’ll be right there to support you — with a nice little discount to celebrate your return.
So, if you’re ready to start the done-for-you copywriting process OR you’ve got a few questions I didn’t answer, then you know the next step. Just fill out the inquiry form so I can get to know you and see how I can help you with your messaging goals!
