Here’s the Deal: Hire a copywriter when you know what you do, who you do it for, and where your time is best served. Stick to DIY when you’re figuring it all out still and need to save the cash for real-life things.
You’d never cut your own bangs the night before a wedding.
But you might do it on a random Tuesday at 11:17 pm when you’re feeling bold, slightly broke, and full of misplaced confidence.
Writing your own website kinda works the same way.
Sometimes it makes perfect sense. And sometimes…you think it looks alright until you see the photos (or your bounce rate).
The difference is: bangs grow out. Website copy? That stays live until you do something about it.
Still, it’s easy to stand there with scissors in one hand and a homepage doc in the other, thinking: “Do I just write my own website and get it done, or do I hire a copywriter before I butcher this thing completely?”
That’s what we’re figuring out here. ‘Cause the truth is, it doesn’t always make sense to hire.
But sometimes, it’s the only thing that makes sense.
I’m not here to upsell you if DIY is the best next move. I’m here because part of doing my job well is knowing when someone shouldn’t hire me.
And sure, that might be “bad business” because most service providers are taught to sell hard all the time. But, I’d rather be honest about when hiring a copywriter just drains your budget or turns into a very expensive rewrite six months from now.
(You can thank me later by hiring me when it is the right time).
Look, if your business structure morphs every time you talk about it and your audience is “vaguely folks who need things,” it’s not time to bring in a copywriter yet.
Because spoiler: your copywriter can’t write about something you haven’t figured out yet. And hiring now means paying someone to write something you’ll probably outgrow before it’s even live.
Some people love the messy middle. They like drafting, editing, overthinking, deleting it all, and starting again.
If that’s you? Go wild. Write your own website. Take your time. Hire me for a Copy Audit when it’s all done.
It won’t always be pretty, and you’ll lose more than a few hours to “perfecting” one sentence. But if you’re willing to roll with the chaos, there’s no reason not to give it a whole-hearted try.
Money goes to living, not line edits.
So if hiring a copywriter means skipping the trip you saved for or side-eying the grocery total, it’s a hard pass. Write your website yourself for now, and consider snagging (Self) Audit That Site for some guidance.
Don’t worry, I’ll be here when you and your credit card are ready to go all in.
This is the moment you raise your hand and say, “Okay, but…I am kinda good at writing?”
And you probably are!
Maybe you write reports, research papers, short stories, or long emails. But just because you create engaging PowerPoint slides, doesn’t mean you’d knock out a Pulitzer-winning novel, right?
The skills that make you good at your kind of writing don’t always translate into writing copy.
Copywriting involves thinking about sales psychology, messaging strategy, audience, SEO, brand voice, and vibes—all packed into a few hundred (or thousand) words. Not exactly something you can Google your way into understanding in one evening.
…then maybe it’s time to admit this isn’t your thing.
Which, honestly? Good on you. Because you’ve got actual work to do, and sitting there staring at your About page for the third hour this week isn’t it.
So here are some clear signs it’s time to hire a copywriter:
Kristen, a somatic therapist, hit all of these points before hiring me to write her website copy.
She was building a surf therapy retreat in Costa Rica, but was spending weeks writing and rewriting her website while her big vision sat by the wayside (or beachside). She told me, “Knowing you, and knowing I was delegating a task to a professional just made sense! I could focus all my time on my job, my clients, and planning my retreat.”
Between the new copy, voice development, and having time to market instead of endlessly tweaking sentences, Kristen sold out her first retreat in weeks…and then her second.
At the time of writing, her third retreat is more than 6 months away, but it only has two available spots left!
You’re not hiring a copywriter because you “can’t write.” You’re hiring one because you’re tired of writing something, deleting it, rewriting it, hating it, and then wondering if the first version was actually fine.
