In today’s post, I’ll be shining a light on the free copywriting tools I can’t live (or work) without! Reading, researching, and writing are the best ways to learn and improve copywriting, but these tools ease the process.
A quick reminder that online AI tools aren’t perfect. While they can help you with grammar, sentence flow, and topic ideas, they aren’t quite at human-level intelligence yet. Nothing beats learning more about writing or getting a second set of eyes on your work.
When you’re writing your website, you want to be positive your message is clearly communicated to your dream clients. I’ve designed my Copy Strategy Call specifically for those who need someone to look over their content. On our call, we’ll chat about tips, suggestions, and future plans for your copy to make sure you’re conveying your unique services to your ideal clients in a compelling way.
Now, what you came for, the five free copywriting tools I use every day!
The classic go-to copywriting tool. Try to find a copywriter, blog post, or tool list that doesn’t talk about Grammarly.
Grammarly works as a Chrome extension to correct your grammar, spelling, comma usage, repetition, and word choice. If you use the webpage version, it’ll even analyze the clarity, engagement, and delivery. Every correction is accompanied by an explanation of why it was made so you can learn and improve your writing.
And that’s just the free version! I imagine the paid version includes a unicorn or fairy dust.
The Hemingway Editor is a copywriting tool that’s helpful for writers who are a bit wordier and poetic in nature. With this app, you can create clear, concise, and understandable text by cutting out the flourishes.
By highlighting difficult-to-read sentences, unnecessary words, and passive voice, the Hemingway Editor helps you understand where you need to simplify or cut. (That sentence was red for difficult, sorry folks!).
Plus it’s so much easier to review your writing when it’s highlighted in pretty colours!
The app also provides an estimated readability level. Keep in mind – the average individual reads comfortably at a grade 7 or 8 level, so make sure your message is clear, straightforward, and compelling.
Want to know how to create impactful, engaging, and eye-catching headlines? Sharethrough Headline Analyzer is the app for you!
By using marketing research and content algorithms, this free headline analyzer scores how likely someone is to interact with your post based on your headline.
Once you enter your headline, you’ll receive a score and suggestions on how to improve your ranking. From including more alert words (or mentions of Drake) to limiting passive language, this analyzer helps you capture attention and deliver a strong message.
Remember, this app won’t write your headline, that’s still up to you!
BTW this headline scored a 70 but would’ve bumped up to 88 if I added Britney Spears to the title. What wouldn’t be better with Britney Spears though?
Answer the Public is my first stop when researching new blog content for clients or myself.
This copywriting tool takes the keyword you enter, scours autocomplete data from search engines, and then provides you with maps and info about the related phrases people are searching for.
And you thought no one knew about your “how long is spaghetti?” search.
Answer the Public gives you an inside look at your audience’s thoughts and curiosities and lets you tailor your content and services directly to them.
Why do you think I wrote this post?
And my ‘What is Copywriting?’ post?
Because those were some of the most common phrases that showed up when I typed in ‘copywriting’.
But if someone could answer the spaghetti question, that’d be great.
There are so many different keyword search engines, extensions, and programs… I usually use a few different ones when choosing the right words or phrases for website copy.
The Keywords Everywhere Chrome extension is one of my favourite quick-use free tool for keywords though.
All you have to do is add the extension to your browser. After that, anytime you search a word or phrase in Google, you’ll get a ton of metrics including trend data, search volume, SEO difficulty, and related keywords. You can also analyze a specific web page or an entire website to find out their keyword usage, ranking, and overall web traffic.
SEO and keywords can make your head spin! But Keywords Everywhere is a simple option to help you start thinking about what keywords you should include in your site to drive traffic to it.
There are a variety of paid and free copywriting tools online. But if you’ve made the (daring) decision to write your own web copy and content, these tools might make your work a little easier.
And if you’re looking for even more help navigating the murky water of keyword research and writing website copy that Google loves…I have a free present for you!
The Creative’s Guide to Keyword Research is a free video training that gives you the exact steps I use to find and implement effective keywords in website copy and content.
